RELEASE THE FRIGHTBATS
Frightbats was a term coined by right wing journalist Tim Blair in a misogynistic blog post for the News Limited’s Daily Telegraph website on June 17, 2014. Under the post titled ‘Crown Our Crazy Queen’, Blair invited readers to vote for “this nation’s most unhinged hysteric” of “Australia’s left-wing ladies’ auxiliary”. Included on Blair’s list querying “Who is Australia’s craziest left-wing frightbat” were Jane Caro, Clementine Ford, Margo Kingston, Van Badham, Anne Summers, Catherine Deveny, Elizabeth Farrelly, Marieke Hardy, Clem Bastow, and Jenna Price.
Although the original post has now been changed, a number of paragraphs have been removed entirely and some of the remaining language has been softened, it still remains as the latest in a long line of attacks on women who speak out about injustice and hate speech.
A number of the women listed are fighting back, adopting the term Frightbats and wearing it proudly. There is also an excellent responce on The Kings Tribune by Jane Gilmore here. With RELEASE THE FRIGHTBATS I wanted to contribute to the movement and support outspoken women fighting for equality all around the world.
RELEASE THE FRIGHTBATS is a series of hand carved lino-printed pennants, waving the flag for women everywhere. The first release was in the Melbourne CBD on the 27 June, 2014.
