Canonically Queer takes mass-produced vintage tapestries and gives them a subtle makeover to celebrate queer icons and cultural outsiders—from Pope Joan to Santa Muerte and Circe.
The original factory-made tapestries served up a narrow, conventional view of history. By reworking them, these pieces flip the script, imagining a world where queer identity has always been part of the fabric of everyday life.
To highlight this subversion, the reworking of each tapestry is intentionally minimal. Rather than stitching over the entire canvas, only the most essential changes are made to the original piece. Leaving the original images mostly visible shows just how little it takes to uncover and honour these sidelined histories.
